What does CARE International do?
CARE International is a world-wide humanitarian charity working in over 60 countries.
Care's mission is to end poverty and suffering in the poorest communities in the
world. This can mean providing emergency relief to victims of natural disasters and
political turmoil and helping them to build a sustainable long-term future. Care
helps local people to find lasting solutions to poverty and, by bringing clean water,
healthcare, education and business opportunities to over 30 million people each year,
can help to change lives for the better.

So, what are examples of some of CARE's projects?
Care has all kinds of projects that cover a wide range of activities including health
and nutrition, agriculture, food, water and sanitation, basic education,
micro-finance and business support and women's empowerment. Unlike many charities,
it not only works in rural areas, but in the slums and shanty towns of rapidly
growing cities, like Delhi, Dhaka and Lusaka.
|
To give you just a few examples:
Afghanistan
For over ten years there has been no regular rubbish collection in Kabul. Sadly, due
to factional fighting during the Taliban rule, civic services collapsed. Since
January 2002, CARE's water and Sanitation project has been organising rubbish
collection, providing over 3,000 people with jobs.
Workers are also beginning to resurface roads and dig drainage ditches for water and
sewage. CARE has also appointed 15 women health educators to work with women in six
districts teaching them basic hygiene concepts.
Bangladesh
The plains of Bangladesh are home to some of the world's poorest communities. CARE
works with local partners, helping to raise landless families from the brink of
destitution to a more secure life using simple, low-cost technology. The CAGES
Project teaches families how to grow fish in wickerwork cages in rivers and ponds.
Communities improve their diets and raise their incomes, taking the first steps out
of poverty.
India
In India about 23 million boys and 36 million girls are out of school. The Girl's
Primary Education Project is just one of many CARE educational projects that aims to
increase the number of girls in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan who
successfully complete their primary education. CARE is now pioneering an IT learning
programme for women and girls, many of whom have never before even seen a computer,
let alone used one.
Better education not only offers communities better job opportunities, it empowers
them to demand better government services and a voice in the decisions that effect
their lives.
Mozambique Floods
The floods of February 2000 raged through Maputo's poorest neighbourhoods, destroying
roads and buildings and scouring deep ravines into the earth. Over the next year,
CARE International assisted communities to build barricades against erosion and
maintain essential services.

So why did we choose to support Care International?
We fully recognise how fortunate we are to be able to undertake a journey like this
and, without intending in any way to sound patronising or corny, we want to give
something back to the people and countries we will be visiting by using our
expedition as a way of raising as much money as we can for charity.
We have spent a lot of time researching the multitude of overseas aid agencies and
asking for the opinions of various friends who work in the field and have first hand
experience of aid work being carried out. For us, CARE stood out as a charity by
reputation and for the respect it commands in its commitment to eradicating poverty
world-wide. We particularly admire Care's long term approach to many of its
projects, which aim to strengthen local people's capacity for self-help. Care
teaches people how to utilise their resources and empowers them to become
self-sufficient.
Despite the large size of the organisation we also felt it would really benefit from
any additional awareness we could bring through our expedition to its tremendously
valuable work overseas.
Please help us to raise money for CARE.
